Not everyone can become a commercial vehicle driver in the US. The job is not only exhausting mentally and physically but is also a big responsibility. A commercial driver bears the safety of everyone on the road. They have to drive for days or even weeks at a stretch, which is why they need to be strong enough to manage the pressure.

CDL exam in Miami is the best way to assess their physical and emotional health. But is this exam enough to determine their ability? Let’s find out.

Aspects of CDL exam in Miami

Also known as DOT physical, a CDL exam comprises assessments of multiple parameters, including:

Vision Exam

This determines your visual ability, which should be at least 20/40 in acuity, with or without using any visual aid. In addition to that, each eye must also have a measurement of at least 70-inch peripheral horizontally. If you have some manageable eye-related condition, you can bring documentation for the same while visiting the exam center.

Hearing Exam

You should be able to hear a forced whisper from at least 5 feet away, with or without using a hearing aid. In mathematical terms, this comes out to be about 40dB or less. If you have some other hearing condition, you can bring documentation for the same while visiting the exam center.

Blood Pressure Assessment

Those suffering from high blood pressure, also known as hypertension, do not get the same medical result as those with controlled blood pressure. 140/90 is considered as the minimum acceptable limit to get a certification for 2 years.

So, if your blood pressure is anywhere between 140–159/90–99, you will have to appear for the exam after 1 year instead of 2. The blood pressure should stay within the 140/90 limit thereafter to continue with annual medical certification.

In the event your blood pressure is 190–179/100–109, you will receive a one-time medical certification for a period of 3 months. Post that, you will have to bring down your blood pressure within the 140/90 limit to be able to receive annual medical certificate reissuance.

You should be able to take blood pressure medication to bring and keep your readings under control.

Urine Exam

This will primarily be done to assess if you suffer from diabetes or not. It may also be used for drug testing for even the slightest amount of drugs within your body. Certain other health indicators may also be assessed before giving you a go-ahead.

Overall Physical Examination

This will assess what all medical aids you use. These include eyeglasses, lenses, hearing aids, pacemakers, and so on. They will assess if you are completely physically capable or if you have an impaired limb. They will further assess the health of your eyes, ears, mouth, throat, chest, lungs, abdomen, and even spine.

Your medical examiner will mention everything they identify on the report. They may also suggest different ways to improve your health, or how to make better use of the medical aids you are already using or should start using going forward.

Psychological Assessment

Emotional health cannot be overlooked in the present times. Since commercial driving can become stressful at times, you need to exhibit a strong character who can get through without breaking a sweat. You should be able to keep yourself entertained and not ever lose focus while driving on the road.

If your responses, both physical and verbal are to the satisfaction of the examiner, you will have cleared yet another important hurdle.
